Holy Shit! Holy Shit! Holy Shit it’s almost here! The Start of the Season! The Opening Day! The First Kickoff! Whatever the hell you want to call it, that day is upon us! You’ll have to forgive my schoolgirl excitement, but this day to me is better than Christmas morning. For the past 4 years, since following the Mighty Arsenal, the start of the season has been a heavily anticipated day. This cult like mentality that is produced has consumed my life and has transformed me into a Gooner Junkie. Sure we’ve had a small fix here in there with some preseason friendlies and an exciting game winning the Community Shield. Those have all been nice and except for the Shield those small hits aren’t quite what I’m jonesin’ for. It’s time to tighten up that strap, enlarge those veins and let the juice run loose.
I love football season. There is nothing like it. The unity, the excitement, the emotions that it brings is something of beauty. Never have I been part of a group who comes together from all different backgrounds, ideals, and beliefs and put whatever differences there may be aside in order to unite under the Arsenal.
Last season was the best season I’ve experienced as Gooner. Sure we finished fourth in the table, but we spent more time on top than any other club. And, if I remember correctly, I believe we won something. Oh yeah, the FA Cup. I’ll never forget that day. It was the first piece of silverware that Arsenal has won since my conversion. Who could forget that come back from being 2-nil down? That power blast of a free kick from Santi “Mighty Mouse” Cazorla, that beautiful header from Kos and, of course, that magical moment Rambo scored in extra time…Like a virgin touch for the very first time, that moment in history was amazing.
But I have higher hopes this season. This summer transfer window has been a first for me as well. It is the first time I can remember us doing big business prior to Deadline Day. We have dropped off a lot of our dead weight but have brought in some strength I feel we’ve needed. I’m excited to see Alexis on the field. He was very impressive, for me, when we beat that other shit team from Manchester last Sunday. He has great speed, great knowledge of where to play the ball, and is great at creating chances. He’s also a very big threat on goal. Yaya is also someone I am excited to see this season. His speed upfront and skill on the ball will only get better. Our defense is strong with Debuchy coming in filling that gap left by Sagna’s departure. Also, wonder boy Chambers will be exciting to watch develop into whatever position Le Boss puts him in. We have Ospina now creating competition for keeper which will only make both him and Szczesny better. I would, though, like to see at least another CB added to the squad, but we will see what happens.
Coming off of a very nice and comfortable win over the blue shit streak of Manchester, combined with one of the strongest squads I’ve seen I feel we have a huge chance as title contenders this year on all fronts. I’m very excited and cannot wait until Saturday. So grab your scarves and shirts. Raise a pint and let’s sing loud as we make this season the best yet. COYG!!!!
…And as always FOYS
