Seems that didn't go as most of us had planned. Another window closes on us as we longingly look at all of the transfers that flirted with us. Benzema wasn't keen. Cavani was a bit pricey. Our frustration is well founded. It's hard to not look at this side and see the gaps we have and where we needed strengthening. Can Giroud really lead the line for the whole season? Will le Coq be able to make it the duration of the campaign? All are good and valid questions and not unfounded fears.
This isn't the first window that I've witnessed come and go with barely a whiff of movement. Seems the January window is specially designed for our torment. The unsettling thing is that it seems our summer windows are becoming just the same. Now it certainly doesn't help when some teams have completely lost the plot and are throwing around money like beads at Mardi Gras. The landscape is completely and utterly skewed at this point. At some point thought we have to at least make an effort. I full well believe that we were making some effort. Things go on behind the scenes that we know nothing of. The club itself is notoriously tight lipped about things. Anyone who saw Ozil coming two windows ago is a liar.
At some point though the club will have to get in the ball park and play. I'm all for us being reasonable but at what point does it become unreasonable when you haggle with another team of 10 million while we sit on over 200? Unfortunately, with our oil strapped friends to the north and west flinging money around the way they do, things aren't going to get better. FFP has been found out to be a joke. We have to react. We have to adapt. In no way am I saying we pull a United and drop 50 million on a 19 year old who hasn't found the frame all season. I am saying we should be willing to go all in on the player we want once we figure out who that is. It's hard to do this at the end of the window. Kicking off the window with intent is the way we need to go. The time for us waiting around for a good bargain if domino's fall our way is over.
To me this is a problem of our own making as well. And the way I see it is that it's a good problem. This is the strongest our squad has been in ages. We've got good depth. Are the goals not going to fall our way all season? Of course not. Honestly we're a blown offside call away from feeling a lot better about our start. We've got quality all over the pitch. If healthy, and I know its a big if, I think we give it a good run at the title. Health surely applies to everyone. If City loses a Silva their wheels will fall off as quickly as us losing an Ozil.
Reinforcements would have been great. I've seen us bring in more players in a window that still didn't get us up to the level we are at now. It's all relative. We've strengthened this squad over the last two seasons. Inactivity in this window isn't going to undo all of that. Sure its not going to speed up success to the point we all want but that's part of the game. Arsene is clearly in for the long haul and I for one am grateful for that. All you have to do is look at the mess that the red side of Manchester has become. No one in their right mind would say they did great business over all. Maybe if they played Brugge every week. Paying twice what you could have for a 19 year old is ludicrous. Amazingly they paid as much as City did for Aguero. If we did that I would literally blow up. So its not always what you spend. It comes more down to how you spend. And if Arsene didn't feel the right deal was out there I'll just have to go with that. There's a reason I work in a bank, or you work where you work, and he oversees one of the greatest football clubs in the world.
Now we've got 4 months to get behind the boys. At no point do I ever think Arsene doesn't have the best for the club in mind. He'll be working on and off the pitch to move us forward. The best and easiest thing we can do is unite and get behind the guys on the pitch. A great run of results will go a long way in helping that. I think we'll see that. Call me the eternal optimist if you will. For better of worse I'm Arsenal till I die. Might as well enjoy it!
(Might be a good idea the clubs sets their clocks 5 minutes ahead so when they do send a contract it gets there on time. Looking at you United…hahahaha)
